Special Information

BackTrack is an operating system based on the Ubuntu GNU/Linux distribution aimed at digital forensics and penetration testing use.

It is named after backtracking, a search algorithm.

Linux Installation Instructions

Download backtrack5r1-ARCH-XXX.tar.gz to /


extract backtrack5r1-ARCH-XXX.tar.gz file:

tar -xvzf backtrack5r1-ARCH-XXX.tar.gz

Download BackTrack 5 R1 ISO Latest Version to /mnt/ :


Mount ISO file to temporary location (/mnt/cdrom/)

mkdir /mnt/cdrom/
mount -o loop /mnt/BT5R1.iso /mnt/cdrom/

Backtrack x86: Copy initrd.gz , vmlinuz to appropriate directory: (LOWER CASE ONLY!)

cp /mnt/cdrom/casper/vmlinuz /tftpboot/er/plugins/backtrack/i386/vmlinuz
cp /mnt/cdrom/casper/initrd.gz /tftpboot/er/plugins/backtrack/i386/initrd.gz
cp /mnt/cdrom/casper/filesystem.* /tftpboot/er/shares/backtrack/i386/casper/

Backtrack x64: Copy initrd.gz , vmlinuz to appropriate directory: (LOWER CASE ONLY!)

cp /mnt/cdrom/casper/vmlinuz /tftpboot/er/plugins/backtrack/x86_64/vmlinuz
cp /mnt/cdrom/casper/initrd.gz /tftpboot/er/plugins/backtrack/x86_64/initrd.gz
cp /mnt/cdrom/casper/filesystem.* /tftpboot/er/shares/backtrack/x86_64/casper/

Verify files with filelist.txt in each folder.
